Five Tips to Help You Save for a New Home

Saving up to buy a home takes dedication and sacrifice. But in the end, putting down a large down payment certainly pays off. Here are some ways you can start saving now for the home of your dreams.

Moonlighting

It might seem daunting, but the best way to increase your income for the sake of saving a down payment is by getting a second job. Even if it's just a few hours a night of delivering pizzas or mowing lawns on the weekend, you will be surprised how that extra income will add up over the weeks and months. It's a big sacrifice, but it will pay off when you have a large down payment to buy a home.

Simplify Your Life

Are there some bills and expenses in your budget that you can do without? Do you really need to have the best cable package available? Can you cut down on the number of songs you purchase each month? Do you eat at restaurants several times a week? Cut those expenses out and start putting that money in an account that is strictly used for saving up a down payment on a new home.

Make It Visible

One strategy to get motivated to save up a down payment is to start putting money in a jar at home. Empty your change from your pockets each night into the jar and any other money that was once used for unnecessary expenses and purchases. When you see that jar fill up it will be very motivating. Once it's full, deposit the money in your down payment account that you have already set up.

Cut Out the Credit

Credit cards are convenient but they often lead you to spend more than you actually need to. In addition, the interest they charge can be brutal on your bank account. Stop using credit cards and cut them up if you need to and work on paying them off quickly. Then apply that money to your down payment and watch it grow.
